Rumor: Half-Life 3 Will Be Open World, Have Quests and NPCs

Jury is still out on whether Gordon Freeman will become Thane of City 17.

An anonymous source “close to Valve” has revealed that not only is Half-Life 3 very much in development (as was brought to light earlier this year), it’s in re-development, having been completely retooled from a standard shooter to something more on the order of an open world RPG. Huh?

Says the International Business Times, who translated the journaldugamer article from its original French, a “reliable source” who wished to remain anonymous (not that it matters because Gabe Newell is Santa Claus and thus, all-knowing) claims that Half-Life 3 has already been “revived several times,” moving further away from the linear shooter model toward something more in the vein of a Bethesda RPG. Take this with a grain of salt, of course, but as OXM‘s Edwin Evans-Thirlwell notes, “We live in a world where Spark Unlimited makes Ninja Gaiden titles and the man behind Deus Ex works for Disney.” In other words, we are obviously already living in the Mirror Universe from Star Trek, so let’s just run with it and see what happens.

Reports journaldugamer, the upcoming Half-Life three will focus more on puzzles and exploration, and is slated for “after 2013,” which suggests it’s shooting (or open-world-RPGing) to cash in on the next console cycle. It will be interesting to see how things develop as we move away from speculation toward more concrete reportage, but for now, this is… something to chew on, at least.

In the mean time, why aren’t you playing Black Mesa?
