Weta Workshop Assembles Portal Sentry Turret For Valve Software

September 20, 2012 by Ian Miles Cheong

NZ-based Weta Workshop has assembled an Aperture Science Sentry Turret for Valve.

Weta Workshop, best known for their work on movies like Prometheus, Lord of the Rings, and many others, have put together a true-to-the-game version of Portal and Portal 2’s Sentry Turret. The construction, which is entirely life-sized, was sent over to Valve’s offices in Bellevue, WA.

Aperture Science Sentry TurretThe Sentry Turret was painstakingly modeled after the Aperture Science Sentry Turret from the Portal series of games. Valve has hoisted up an unboxing video on YouTube showcasing the whole thing, which you can watch above.

According to Weta Workshop, Valve requested the company create the Sentry Turret after doing the same for the Engineer’s Sentry Turret in another Valve game, Team Fortress 2.

More than simply looking cool, the Sentry Turret actually runs customized paintball software and is capable of packing away and expanding when activated, much like it does in game.

The Sentry Turret is equipped with a motion sensor which activates the turret when it detects movement, and goes to sleep when nothing’s around. When a target is “acquired” by the turret, it produces gunfire sound effects and flashing lights reminiscent to how it works in Portal.

Weta Workshop says that they may have plans to produce more turrets if Valve shares the license with them, but they expect each Sentry Turret to cost a small fortune.

In addition to their work on licensed properties, Weta Workshop has expressed a desire to work on their own gaming franchise based on Dr Grodborts, some items of which have appeared in Team Fortress 2 as equipment for the Pyro, Engineer, and Soldier classes.
