Black Mesa Source Releases, Promptly Crashes Internet

September 14, 2012 by Kris Ligman

…Well that escalated quickly.

So, hey. Remember when we posted a couple weeks ago that the long-anticipated fan remake of Half-Life, Black Mesa (formerly Black Mesa Source), was finally getting released? Well, that day is today! Calloo, callay!

When the link happens to load, you can run over to the official torrent page and download the first leg of the game. If that isn't working for you, here's a mirror. And here it is on DropBox. And Shacknews. One of those downloads has to work, so go on, do it. We'll wait here.

Okay. Found a working link? Good on you. Damn, you'd think Half-Life was a very important game to a lot of people or something.

To reiterate, this version of Black Mesa only covers up to the Lambda Core level. While the rest of the remake is coming at a later date, Black Mesa's developers said they wanted to release its current form to give "a complete 8-10 hour experience with a solid ending." Hey, it's still longer than most modern FPSes. And while the game is free, requiring only the free Source SDK Base 2007 off Steam to play, you may consider kicking its score composer a few bucks for the cool all-new soundtrack. You know, when the official site stops 403ing.

And since you may be confused: while Black Mesa was successfully upvoted through Steam Greenlight a matter of days ago, that is a later release we'll be seeing down the line. For now, keep calm and keep F5ing. Or, you know, don't because that's kind of a dick thing to do. Seriously, come back in a few hours maybe? It'll keep.

Kudos to VG24/7 for some of the alternate links.
