McPixel Devs Detail The Pirate Bay Ploy Stats

September 13, 2012 by Patricia Hernandez

Toying with piracy can net developers sales, it seems.

Last weekend, McPixel developers put their game on The Pirate Bay to promote it. We speculated that this was a great move that would likely result in decent sales or at least good publicity. I mean, how many developers do you see taking ADVANTAGE of piracy?

According to a report by Giant Bomb, we were right. Here are the at-a-glance stats from the endeavor:

  • $7,824.69 made in total
  • $1,035.05 worth of PayPal fees
  • $6,789.64 overall net worth (without fees)
  • 3,055 purchases
  • $2.56 per-purchase average
  • 625 1-cent purchases
  • 688 zero purchases (or, at least, under .30–all goes to PayPal fees)
  • 1,917 purchases under a dollar
  • 2,185 purchases under the average ($2.56)
  • 870 purchases over the average ($2.56)
  • 171 purchases equal or higher the retail price ($9.99)

Not bad! Even though they lost some money from fees, still, that's a good deal of dough to make just on a weekend, no? Its amazing to see how many people sent a single damn cent though. There were more 0 cent purchases than 1 cent ones though–but only just barely. And the most anyone gave, according to the McPixel website, was $140 dollars.

How many developers will try to copy this marketing ploy? Time will tell! It would probably only be indie developers if anyone does, I bet. It won't be as novel the next time around though, so maybe they won't be as succesful. Who knows.
