EA: iPhone 5 Does “Console Quality” Games

September 13, 2012 by Alex Co

EA is claiming that the newly-announced iPhone 5 will be capable of console quality games…

While the internets exploded yesterday with iPhone 5's announcement, can the new phone from Apple do more in regards to gaming than what we have now?

Electronic Arts (EA), the world's second-largest videogame publisher in the world, thinks it will. As part of the iPhone 5's unveiling, the publisher showcased Real Racing 3.

According to EA, the racing game will take advantage of the iPhone 5's new A6 processor and larger screen size to offer what EA's Rob Murray describes as "full console quality."

Here's a trailer for Real Racing 3 so you can judge for yourself.

One example of how the iPhone 5's new features will be used is that Real Racing 3 will can now feature a driver's seat view with real-time reflections for the rear-view mirror — thus, allowing the player to see cars coming up behind them.

Additionally, Real Racing 3 will use Game Center for multiplayer. This will allow players to race against their friend's recorded times and ghost data.

I do admit, the screenshot and video does showcase amazing graphics. I can't believe the technological jump smartphones have been able to do in just a few short years. However, as is the case with other iOS games, it will once again come down to how the game actually plays.

Yes, the game can look like something from the PS Vita, but if it's not fun to play due to clunky and unresponsive controls, then what's the point, right?

Do you see iPhone gaming matching console gaming anytime soon? Come to think of it, should Nintendo and Sony be worried with the iPhone 5 encroaching the 3DS and PS Vita's space?
