Insomniac CEO Shares Thoughts on Why Resistance Never Became Sony’s Halo

September 12, 2012 by Alex Co

Insomniac CEO Ted Price gives his thoughts on why the Resistance franchise never became Sony’s Halo.

Sony tried to set up Killzone as their "Halo killer" back when the game was first announced. When Killzone 1 failed to live up to its potential, Sony groomed another franchise to be their own "Halo" and it was Insomniac's Resistance series (at least according to Kotaku).

Obviously, after three major entries in the franchise each, both Killzone and the Resistance franchise have yet to materialize as Sony's Halo or Halo killer. While both games are considered success stories on their own, they're admittedly, not on the same level as Microsoft's FPS behemoth.

While Killzone failed to live up to its billing due to clunky controls and whatnot, Insomniac CEO Ted Price has spoken out on why Resistance never became Sony's Halo.

We have theories internally about why Resistance wasn't a Halo…One is that we changed the game a lot in Resistance 2, and we surprised players in a way that perhaps wasn't what was expected. And that may have not been a good thing. By changing up some of the core mechanics and— we got a lot of strong feedback when we did that.

Insomniac, of course, is now paired up with EA and set to do multiplatform games. While they've publicly revealed that they won't be working on the Resistance franchise anytime soon, that doesn't mean Sony won't have another one of their studios take over the franchise.

I think, the question here is, would you want that to happen? With Resistance 3 going back to its roots and still failing to sizzle the retail charts, is the franchise finished already?

Which Sony franchise do you think is the closest to Halo when it comes to scope and brand recognition? Should Sony keep pumping out more shooters until they finally get it right or is Master Chief too big of an enemy to take down now?
