Eidos Montreal Fires Employee For Posting Hate Speech on Facebook

September 10, 2012 by Ian Miles Cheong

Eidos Montreal has fired an employee following the comments he made on Facebook about Pauline Marois.

Pauline Marois

An employee of Eidos Montreal was fired for hate speech over the weekend. Blake Marsh, who served as a tester at the Canadian studio wrote on his Facebook page that he hoped someone would kill Quebec’s newly elected prime minister, Pauline Marois.

Party Quebecois’ Pauline Marois had only just suffered an attempt on her life on September 4 when a would-be assassin broke into her victory celebration party and shot to death an audio technician and injured three others who were present at the event. The shooter was unhappy with the fact that she had won the election and rather than participating in the democratic process, he decided to take matters into his own hands by making an attempt on her life.

Unfortunately, Blake Marsh seems to share the shooter’s outlook and posted a number of comments on his Facebook page expressing his desire to see Pauline Marois killed.

"You just can't find good assassins these days!" he wrote. "I give this bitch a month before someone with better aim comes forth and does what must be done."

His comments were brought to the attention of Eidos Montreal General Manager Stephane D’Astous, who said that the studio received dozens of emails complaining about them. After briefly consulting with a lawyer, D’Astous fired Marsh, who had been with the company for over four years.

"I think he thought that social networking posts were private matters, but in fact, they're not," D'Astous said. "When you cross the line so clearly, like in this situation, and you associate yourself not just with your person but with your employer, that's totally unacceptable."

While Marsh may not necessarily be charged for what he wrote on Facebook, we can’t help but agree with Eidos’ decision on the matter.
