Nintendo Cancels Project Giant Robot

February 1, 2017 by Dennis Patrick

RIP Project Giant Robot.

It shouldn’t come to much surprise that Nintendo decided on the cancellation of their video game project called Project Giant Robot. The video game wasn’t really discussed to the media and the general public. With only one public appearance, the video game was officially confirmed to be dead by Nintendo to Polygon.

The project was being developed by Nintendo and was shown off during E3 2014. Demoing the video game for the media was Shigeru Miyamoto in which gameplay showcased a giant robot smashing through a city and battling enemies. Most of the gameplay seemed to rely on the Nintendo Wii U gamepad and since the Wii U has been discontinued in Japan with the Nintendo Switch console release launching in March, it’s not shocking to see the title was dropped.

Nintendo is moving away from support for the Wii U as they focused on their upcoming Nintendo Switch console release. In fact, it was revealed that the last first-party video game to launch on the Nintendo Wii U will be upcoming The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild which launches alongside the Nintendo Switch on March 3, 2017.

When questioned about the video game title being scrapped from Polygon, a Nintendo representative stated the following.

“We made this decision after considering our overall product and development strategy.”

In the meantime, there are plenty of video games to look forward to the Nintendo Switch. It was recently reported that there are a hundred titles being developed so far for the upcoming video game console.
