As the Winter Sale for Steam went live just yesterday, hacker group Phantom Squad plans to ruin the fun by issuing a major DDoS attack against the Steam servers. Luckily, the servers are now back up, but sadly still going down periodically.
This all has to do with known hacker group Phantom Squad. During the Holiday seasons, hackers like to come out a ruin all the fun for gamers by DDoS’ major gaming platforms like PSN, Xbox Live, and Steam. Earlier today Phantom Squad released a huge attack on Steam, resulting in every server being down and a total of zero people online.
The Phantom Squad warned us earlier this year that they were planning to DDoS the gaming networks during the busy Christmas season. Hackers like bringing down the network during this time because it affects gamers during their holiday break and it ruins their opportunities to join in on the major sales.
Most of the Steam servers are back online, however, like mentioned before the network is still going down periodically. Hopefully, Sony and Microsoft take note and up their security as they are most likely next on Phantom Squad’s list.
Update #1: Phantom Squad’s Twitter account has been suspended.
