Epic Games Recruits Kingdoms of Amalur Devs for Impossible Studios

August 9, 2012 by Ian Miles Cheong

Epic Games has put together a new satellite company staffed by former 38 Studios devs.

The developers at 38 Studios had a good thing going with Kingdoms of Amalur—at least until they ran out of money and had to close shop. With the franchise and everything they worked on now in the possession of the Rhode Island government, much of the team has since splintered and found work at other studios.

A good portion of the 38 Studios team—especially those who made up Big Huge Games, which developed Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning, have banded together in Maryland to become a part of an Epic Games satellite studio in the region.

Epic Games' CEO Mike Capps said that the company was helping to look those affected by putting together a new studio called Impossible Studios in association with Sean Dunn, who ran BHG. Dunn will be taking on the role of studio director at the new outfit.

Impossible's first game will be to aid in the development of Infinity Blade: Dungeons, an action RPG for the iOS. The game has been in development at both Epic and Chair Entertainment, and will see its completion at the new studio. Infinity Blade: Dungeons is set for release later this year.

As for what comes next, we'll just have to see—but can we expect Impossible to get back into what they do best by making a new RPG.
