Telltale Games Senior Vice President Calls $0.99 iOS Gamer Theory a “Myth”

August 6, 2012 by Lana Polansky

Why Steve Allison believes that iOS app sales should derive from quality, not just cost.

Speaking to PocketGamer.biz, Telltale Games' Senior Vice President of Publishing Steve Allison shared his skepticism of the `$0.99 gamer` theory—specifically, that it`s more "myth than fact."

Telltale Games recently released iOS title The Walking Dead, the episodic zombie adventure game based on the comic book and television show, first released in April 2012 for PC, Xbox 360 and PS3.

The game, which is largely identical to its PC and console counterparts, is being sold in the App Store for $6.99 for iPad and $4.99 for iPhone—not that far off from the five-dollar price tag the game has on XBLA. And the sales results, says Allison, have been quite positive.

"We knew The Walking Dead was shaping up to be a great touch screen experience and as our first universal iOS title that would also be available on console, $4.99 an episode is consistent with our past successful experiences on the App Store and with the pricing on other platforms.

The idea of a 99c gamer on iOS is more myth than fact. It's the quality and depth of each product that will drive the right price for consumers.

We've had a great initial launch as a top 10 title with no signs of slowing down and great feedback on the game from people who have bought the game for their iOS devices," Allison says.
