Paradox Interactive Releases “A Range” of New War of the Roses Videos

July 31, 2012 by Lana Polansky

Upcoming feudally-inclined action game will have players taking an arrow to the face.

Here’s a history lesson: the War of the Roses was a 15th century feud between rivalling royal houses, the House of Plantagenet and the dual houses of Lancaster and York. The houses, each represented by a red and a white rose respectively, duked it out over what were in fact several grizzly battles between 1455—1485 to determine who would ascend the throne of England. Ultimately, the remote Lancastrian, Henry Tudor, claimed victory over the last Yorkist king, Richard III, and ended up marrying Elizabeth of York to unite both houses.

What does that have to do with Paradox Interactive? Not a tremendous amount, but enough to be relevant to videos recently released for the publisher's historically-inspired game developed by Fatshark, including a trailer and tournament footage from last week’s tour in San Francisco.

The trailer for War of the Roses, explains a press release, “introduces the world to the ranged units appearing in the medieval combat game, along with several painful reminders of how arrows interact with faces at high speed.”

Truly, the actual War of the Roses was a bloody, ruthless struggle. In that spirit, tournament footage has been uploaded to the Paradox interactive channel on TwitchTV, letting viewers soak up “every bloody, gruesome moment of the mayhem,” and appreciate Twitch team’s valiant, ultimate victory.

War of the Roses is, of course, a medieval multiplayer-focused game loosely based upon that sanguinary blip in European history. The game offers brutal, real-time combat, pitting players against each other as they face off with “roving squads of armoured knights.”

While the PC title has not yet been released to the fleshy, unknowing masses, sign-ups for the soon-to-come Beta are still being accepted here.
