Classic Diablo is Being Remade in Diablo III as The Darkening of Tristram

November 4, 2016 by Ian Miles Cheong

The original Diablo is getting a remake.

Diablo
Blizzard Entertainment revealed today at BlizzCon 2016 that they will be releasing a new version of Diablo by recreating it inside of Diablo 3.

The remaster will arrive in an upcoming content update for Reaper of Souls called The Darkening of Tristram. It sends players back into the depths of the Cathedral. The Darkening of Tristram is 16 levels deep and players will face off against classic enemies as well as the four main bosses of the game, including The Skeleton King, Archbishop Lazarus, The Butcher and Diablo.

When you venture into Tristram, the first thing you’ll notice are the graphics, which have been filtered to look pixelated and grainy, like the original Diablo. Frank Pearce, the chief development officer of Blizzard, calls this effect “glorious retrovision.”

Additionally, movement will be limited to eight directions.

Pearce says that the game will be a proper old-school Diablo experience, and will be available to all current characters. He recommends that players create new ones to check it out, however.

Players who complete the Darkening of Tristram will receive special rewards, including portraits and a Butcher pet, special transmogs (a Soulstone embedded in your head, the Butcher’s Cleaver, and Wirt’s leg) and also a legendary gem for your helmet.

You won’t need to pay for it—it’s free.
