Square Enix Announces Free “Kids’ Time” for Upcoming Dragon Quest X Online

July 5, 2012 by Lana Polansky

The company plans offer kids under the age of 12 two hours of free play.

In an attempt to attract more kids to the series, Square Enix has announced that the upcoming Wii MMO Dragon Quest X Online will include two free hours of gameplay every day.

The slot, known as "Kids' Time," will go from 4 to 6 p.m. on weekdays and 1 to 3 p.m. on weekends. An in-game message will let players know when their time is almost up, and any player without money in their account will have their game automatically saved and will be disconnected from the server. The game is set to launch in Japan on August 2nd, with the standard package costing 1, 000 yen (or $12).

Square Enix noted that these times, which were selected after receiving customer feedback from demo events held at malls this past Spring, may change in the future. The times, it seems, were chosen to accomodate Japanese grade-school schedules, making it inconvenient for any child over the age of 12 to log on.

The company also said that while the game will not contain an age-verification system, they ask that consumers, “please understand this service is aimed at children.”
