The largest subreddit for No Man’s Sky on reddit shut down temporarily because its moderators couldn’t keep up with the complaints players had about the game. It has reopened under a new team willing to take up the task of keeping its threads civil. Official reddit administrators had to step in to reopen the subreddit after it was unceremoniously shuttered last night by its creator.
According to the post made by the owner, and only remaining member of the moderation team, the subreddit, which has over 146,000 subscribers, had become a “hate filled wastehole of no actual discussion.”
The moderator says that the subreddit was not how its creators intended, and that they didn’t want to provide a platform for “hate.”
“I’m sorry to everyone who used the subreddit as intended but you are now in the majority. I’m sure you can find a different place to discuss this game. It’s not hard,” he wrote. “This was my decision and mine alone. The other moderators tried to sway my opinion but cynicism got the best of me as usual.”
Wiping the entire subreddit and deleting all of its posts were among the actions considered by the moderators at the time.
One of the subreddit’s most popular posts consisted of a list of everything wrong with the game, including the broken promises Hello Games had made to its fans. The thread was deleted for unknown reasons and later reposted on r/games due to popular demand from gamers unhappy with the state of No Man’s Sky.
Other subreddits for the game exist, but they’re all heavily moderated and allow little actual criticism of the game.
