Mass Effect 3: Leviathan DLC References Hidden in Extended Cut

June 27, 2012 by Ian Miles Cheong

References to new DLC content appear to be hidden in the files of the Extended Cut for Mass Effect 3.

Fans digging into the newly released Extended Cut of Mass Effect 3 have found major references to a DLC called Leviathan. The host of data was buried within the recesses of the Extended Cut's files, which weigh in at 1.85gb.

Spoilers follow.

References in the hidden expansion focuses on a Reaper called Leviathan. The DLC appears to begin with a search for the Leviathan using the Normandy's scanners, with references to false leads and proper coordinates.

Shepard and his crew land on an asteroid with a mining facility not unlike Feros in the first Mass Effect, where all its citizens are indoctrinated and under the control of Leviathan. A character by the name of Dr. Ann Bryson and her father appear to have some insight into Leviathan.

The Leviathan is a defector, and it shows allegiance to Shepard and the Alliance but not after spending some time in Shepard's head.

Interestingly enough, the DLC explores the origins of the Reapers and their creators—who are also alluded to in a new piece of dialogue by the so-called Star Child, or Catalyst, at the end of the game. The new line was added with the Extended Cut DLC.

Despite the obvious spoilers, I hope to see BioWare expand upon the origins of the Reapers and actually release the DLC at some point in the future.
