Final Fantasy VII is Coming to Steam

June 21, 2012 by Mat Growcott

Days after Square Enix registers FinalFantasyVIIPC.com, information appears on a Steam version of Final Fantasy VII.

What would it take to get you to buy Final Fantasy VII again? If you have any interest in the game, you own the original disks, the digital download on PS3 and you're patiently awaiting the PS1 compatibility on Vita so that you can play through Cloud's adventure yet another time. Surely you have no reason to spend another 10 bucks to get the same game again?

Square Enix are hoping that that isn't the case, with the unofficial reveal of Final Fantasy VII on Steam. Apparently information about the re-release was prematurely leaked on the recently registered finalfantasyVIIPC.com – a website we reported on last week – and one keen Final Fantasy fan managed to take a screenshot of the information, you can see it in the link below.

As well as the benefit of having Final Fantasy VII right from your Steam library, Square are trying to sweeten the deal a little bit. They're adding cloud saves (although who he saves, I'm not too sure) and achievements, 36 of them in fact, for people who like that sort of thing. There's also profiles with which to compare your progress over that of your friends and, here's the controversial bit, a small piece of DLC which will allow players to buy their characters to higher HP, MP and gil.

I'm struggling against buying it just to have it in my list (plus achievements). If it looked anything like the fan-made remake above, I'd be tempted, but in higher resolutions and high-end computers it'll end up looking as rough as on PS3 (at least when compared with PSP). Of course, this may all end up to be part of some well played prank, but for now it's looking very, very real and I'm not sure if that's a good thing.

You can see the screen made from the leak on the website by clicking here.
