Neversoft Working on Call of Duty Franchise

June 15, 2012 by Alex Co

Chalk up another studio at Activision enlisted to work on Call of Duty games.

Neversoft Entertainment, known for their Tony Hawk and Guitar Hero games, is now officially part of the Call of Duty "squad" at Activision. This is readily apparent just by taking a glance at the studio's website.

It reads:

That's what we do. We have molded our team into a crack squad of eager developers ready to push the First Person Action genre in support of Activision's Call of Duty franchise. If you are interested in being part of the Neversoft team, check out our site and see what we have to offer.

In my count, Activision now has six studios working on the Call of Duty brand. You have Treyarch — who's busy pumping away at this year's Black Ops II, Infinity Ward (MW3), Sledgehammer Games (MW3), Raven Software, Beachhead Studios (Call of Duty Elite) and now Neversoft.

I don't know about you, but that's a lot of teams for one Intellectual Property (IP). Maybe they're planning on doing another Call of Duty spin-off? Aside from Black Ops and the Modern Warfare spin-offs, could Neversoft and the other studios working on their own tale?

It's been said that Neversoft and Raven Software is credited for Call of Duty's map packs and other assets. Could this be their chance at the big leagues?

Conspiracy theorist in me thinks that Neversoft and the other teams will continue to make Call of Duty games for the PS3, Xbox 360, etc. While Treyarch and Infinity Ward will be moving on to next-gen Call of Duty development. Sounds plausible, no?

Nonetheless, don't be surpised if we see more than one Call of Duty game a year.

Are you okay with what Activision is doing? Should they strike while the iron's hot or back off for a bit so the franchise doesn't suffer the same fate as their Guitar Hero and Tony Hawk games?
