Report: Steam Coming to Linux in 2013

June 4, 2012 by Ian Miles Cheong

Valve may have plans to bring Steam to Linux in 2013.

Word from French gaming website JeuxVideo would have it that Valve is finally taking its Steam digital distribution platform over to the Linux.

Requests for Steam to appear on Linux have been made ever since Valve introduced it to the Mac more than a year ago. The French report suggests that Valve has set up a 2013 date for the service's launch, and that it will be accompanied with a Linux version of the Source Engine for all its titles.

The games that currently run on the Source Engine include the Half-Life series, Team Fortress 2, Portal and Portal 2, and DOTA 2. A few third party titles also run on the Source Engine, but there's no guarantee that any of those will be ported over to Linux, as some of them (like Dark Messiah of Might and Magic) have yet to appear on the Mac.

Users of the free operating system are going to be no doubt pleased.
