PS3 Backwards Compatibility Could be Returning Via Gaikai Deal

June 1, 2012 by Zak Islam

Sony may be bringing back backwards compatibility to the PS3.

Sony is supposedly bringing back backwards compatibility to the PlayStation 3 via the rumored cloud gaming deal with Gaikai.

The PlayStation 3's 60 GB model, as well as the older 80 GB models were the only consoles with backwards compatibility before they were discontinued. According to GI.biz, the service will be making a return to Sony's console to allow PS2 and PSOne games support, with the announcement due at E3. The returning component will apparently support first-party games, in addition to allowing third-party publishers to sell back catalogues.

Several PlayStation 2 classics have already been remastered by Sony and third-party publishers into a remastered HD version. Most recently, the PS2 versions of Max Payne, Need for Speed: Most Wanted and SSX On Tour have been sold directly from the PlayStation Store.
