DOTA 2 will be Free-to-Play, “Spoils of War” System Detailed

The MOBA genre is comprised of a very few games. However, each of these games has seen massive success, and it could be argued that it is one of the few genres with “growing room.” Some of the MOBAs you might be familiar with include, but are not limited to: League of Legends, Heroes of Newerth, and Defense of the Ancients – otherwise known as “DOTA.”

Well, DOTA 2 is growing ever closer. Valve, the game’s developer, has announced that the MOBA will be backed by a dedicated store and customization system. They call this “The Spoils of War,” and offers players the chance to create their very own heroes through the purchase of items and such.

The game will also feature full Steam Workshop integration.

“DOTA 2 will not be a pay-to-win game. All the items in the store are cosmetic, and don’t affect gameplay,” Valve writes.

“All of the heroes will be available free of charge. We believe restricting player access to heroes could be destructive to game design, so it’s something we plan to avoid.

“DOTA’s always been a game where the community has had an extremely active role in driving it forward, from the huge amount of feedback that Icefrog receives to the number of suggestions posted in the hero ideas forums. We wanted to make sure that Dota 2 expands on that community interaction even further, to the point where players can directly contribute to the game itself.”
