Japanese Social Gaming Developers Set Spending Cap for Kids

April 26, 2012 by Elizabeth DeLoria

Should other countries take note?

Surprise, surprise! Turns out children aren’t very good at managing money, with Japanese social game operators setting a cap on how much kids can spend in a month.

The six Japanese social gaming giants, including Gree, DeNA and CyberAgent, announced an agreement on Wednesday that will place a cap on purchases by players under the age of 18. This was prompted by media criticism following several cases of children spending up to tens of thousands of yen on microtransactions.

Players under the age of 18 can spend up to ¥10,000 (US$124) a month, while players under 15 will be capped at ¥5,000 ($62).
