Chinese Will Soon be the Most Spoken Language on the Internet

April 23, 2012 by Elizabeth DeLoria

我不会说中文

For now, English is the most widely used language on the internet. However, according to TechInAsia, Chinese is catching up.

At the moment, English takes up about 27% of the internet, with that figure decreasing year after year. In 2000, for example, English made up 39% of the internet, decreasing to 32% in 2005. Meanwhile, Chinese has found itself expanding from 9% in 2000 to 13% in 2005. In 2011, Chinese sat at 24%.

It’s predicted that Chinese will dethrone English as the most common language on the internet in 2014, which isn’t really that much of a surprise when you consider the fact that Mandarin Chinese is the most spoken language in the world.

Is this a good time to start working Mandarin into my insults à la Firefly?
