Respawn CEO Reveals His Surprise That Titanfall Became A Microsoft Exclusive Title

June 30, 2016 by Dennis Patrick

Titanfall was originally suppose to be a timed Microsoft exclusive release.

Who knew that Titanfall would have been such a massive hit? The video game came from a startup development company called Respawn Entertainment and it happened to be the development studios first video game release. By working out a deal with Electronic Arts, Titanfall quickly became a Microsoft exclusive title, but as it turns out, Respawn Entertainment’s CEO was shocked to learn that Microsoft retained full exclusivity for the game and not just a timed exclusive release.

Titanfall, a futuristic mech first-person shooter, released back in 2014 for the Xbox One, Xbox 360, and PC. Being Respawn Entertainment’s first video game release, publisher Electronic Arts made a deal with Microsoft and according to Respawn’s CEO, Vince Zampella, it was always planned to see Titanfall as a Microsoft exclusive title at launch.

Unknown to Vince Zampella, the game became a full Microsoft exclusive title, meaning their hopes to see it also release for the PlayStation 4 was quickly and abruptly taken away. This became apparent after Vince sent out a tweet back in 2013, before the release of Titanfall.

Always MS exclusive at launch, great partner and focus is good for a startup. EA made a deal for the rest, we only found out recently =(

Since then, Gamesradar had the chance to speak with the producer to Titanfall 2.

“It was a bit of surprise, yeah. It was always supposed to be an exclusive at launch, but we always assumed we would bring it to PlayStation”.

Luckily for PlayStation 4 owners, Titanfall 2 will be seeing a release on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC. Furthermore, the sequel will have a full story campaign mode, a feature that has been missing in the original Titanfall release.
