Kratos Character Development Inspired By Canceled Star Wars Show

During this year E3 2016, we saw the grand reveal of God of War, during Sony’s press conference briefing. The event was incredible and fans have been eager to learn more about what Kratos is up against this time around. Now new information was revealed on Kratos character development after an interview between VentureBeat and Cory Barlog, the creative director at Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Santa Monica Studio.

It’s no secret now that Kratos will be going on his next rage fueled adventure with his newly found son. However, the character development for Kratos this time around has been altered just a bit and it was discovered that much of his character was influenced by an old canceled Star Wars show.

Cory Barlog spoke of his time working at LucasFilm and how he was able to read through a script of an old canceled live-action Star Wars show. It was within this script that he found the inspiration for changing up the god killing anti-hero Kratos.

“Probably the really small beginnings of this idea, the germination of this — when I was working at [Lucasfilm], I was allowed to go up to the ranch and read the scripts for the [canceled live-action Star Wars] TV show. It was the most mind-blowing thing I’d ever experienced. I cared about the Emperor. They made the Emperor a sympathetic figure who was wronged by this fu*king heartless woman. She’s this hardcore gangster, and she just totally destroyed him as a person. I almost cried while reading this. This is the Emperor, the lightning out of the fingers Emperor. That’s something magical.

That first idea, though, was pitching Kratos getting another chance at being a dad. That was the essence of the pitch. People were kind of looking at me sideways. ‘What are you talking about?’ But you start thinking about it a little bit. How would he deal with that? Just saying, ‘Oh, Kratos wants redemption’ is selfish. It’s old Kratos. It’s self-centered. It has no purpose. But this idea — something beyond him is motivating him to change. He’s known for a long time that he needs to change. But the change is coming from not wanting to repeat the mistakes of his past.”

There have been other reports from Cory Barlog in the past since the God of War video game reveal. For instance, we’ve seen reports of how Norse mythology easily melds within the franchise along with how some of the gameplay mechanics will work in the final release.

As for when gamers can get their hands on a copy of the upcoming God of War video game, so far the PlayStation 4 exclusive title is not set to release until sometime next year, 2017.
