More Clues That Nintendo NX Will Use Cartridge Based Games Found?

June 24, 2016 by Dennis Patrick

Filing for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild states the game will release as a cartridge.

Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

There has been a healthy dose of regular speculation, rumored, and leaked pieces online for Nintendo’s upcoming console release code-named the Nintendo NX. One of those rumored pieces that have been circulating the web for some time now is the possibility Nintendo will use a cartridge based media format for the upcoming console release. New details have surfaced online that further suggests the Nintendo NX as being a cartridge based video game console.

This new shred of news comes from a NeoGaf user by the name of Atheerios. According to Atheerios, he has found a US trademark filing for the upcoming The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild that states the game will also be available as a video game cartridge.

“Downloadable electronic game programs; downloadable electronic video game software; electronic game programs; electronic game software; video game cartridges; video game discs; video game memory cards; video game programs; video game software.”

However, this does not necessarily mean that the upcoming Zelda title will, in fact, be released as a cartridge format as sometimes these trademark filings cover all basis in an attempt to possibly future-proof the listing. Regardless, it’s interesting that even trademark filings are labeling video games as cartridge-based for the Nintendo NX.

Going back to cartridge-based video games would not be a terrible thing as these formats have increased in tremendously in storage size and has also become cheaper to manufacture. We’ll simply have to wait and see what the final verdict is for what the Nintendo NX will use as a media format when it’s officially unveiled by the Nintendo company.
