Akaneiro: A Japanese Red Riding Hood by American McGee

April 10, 2012 by Mat Growcott

American McGee is taking a break from warping the world of Wonderland and is instead turning his eyes to the dark world of Little Red Riding Hood

If you were forced to sit through the latest take of the Red Riding Hood fairy tale or if you read the book, I feel sorry for you. I read the book for review and moments of potential ok-ness were ruined by too many attempts at bagging the Twilight crowd. It also pioneered the book version of bad DLC and, for those of you that haven't read the book, the final chapter was only available online and didn't become viewable by the public until after the film's release, several months after the book was in stores.

So perhaps it's time for somebody with a little more, well, skill to take on the fairy tale, to deliver it as it's supposed to be. This is where American McGee, his studio Spicy Horse and their new game Akaneiro come into play – it's a dark take on the Red Riding Hood fairy tale and an action-RPG that we'll all be queuing to play come release.

Red Riding Hood isn't the only inspiration for the game, the studio has also looked to Japanese history and myth for inspiration, and it comes together in a nice hand-drawn package.

The only potential downer on this project is that it's a free-to-play game for PC, the web and tablets – that doesn't necessarily mean it'll be terrible, but that particular section of the industry has definite highs and lows.
