Average price of gaming rises in the UK

March 22, 2012 by Mat Growcott

If you felt you’d spent more on games over the last 12 month than ever before, it might not just be because there have been more quality titles.

Buying games has become slightly more expensive, MCV have reported. The average price of buying a game has risen from £24.32 in 2010 to £25.63 last year. This is still far below (by nearly 40%) the usual launch price of £39.99, not a surprising fact considering the wealth of great titles available in the last months of 2011 and that not everybody is in a position to re-mortgage their house in order to buy everything coming out.

Despite some pretty amazing deals, GAME and Gamestation selling Skyrim at a little over £20 springs to mind, it wasn't enough to stave off the rising average. This was put down to higher priced AAA titles like Modern Warfare 3 and FIFA and the slowing of sales for budget titles, primarily on the Wii and DS.

With the potential closure of GAME and HMV struggling with game sales as well, it'll be interesting to see how the average is affected in 2012.
