We’re getting into September, and while that might mean the start of fall and schools getting back in full swing, there are still plenty of games to tie us over until the next big release on your radar drops. August had quite a few notable game releases that caught our attention. If you want a quick recap of some games you don’t want to skip over, check out some of our favorites below. That said, don’t anticipate these games being ranked in any particular order, as they range quite drastically in genres. Furthermore, if we have a Before You Buy video on these, you’ll find the link embedded below.
Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy
Fans of the A Plague Tale series got another serving in August. In this game, you’re stepping into the role of a young woman named Sophia. With a bizarre past and strange visions, Sophia is seeking answers. Everything points to a mysterious island where you’ll uncover what kinds of supernatural horrors have attached themselves to her. So prepare to explore, solve puzzles, sneak, and unleash hell on your enemies as you strive to figure out what in the world is going on.
The Sinking City 2
Mix Lovecraftian and the roaring 1920s together; what do you get? Well, you get The Sinking City 2. Get ready for another survival horror experience, so you know what that means. Limited resources and everything under the sun wants you dead. The Sinking City 2 puts players into the city of Arkham, where a hellish nightmare has overcome the area. Of course, you’re going to dig deeper into the madness. Why? Turns out the love of your life had her soul trapped there thanks to a ritual. Talk about some rotten luck!
ReStory: Chill Electronics Repairs
Ever wanted to open up your own repair shop? ReStory: Chill Electronics Repair gives you that option. Kicking you back in the 2000s, you’ll have a tiny little repair shop where you’ll take on customers’ various gadgets and consoles. It’s all about diagnosis as you seek out the problem, clean up the console, and repair it for the customer. You’ll slowly build up your little shop to a thriving business. Plus you get the benefit of not burning yourself with solder in real life!
Mortal Shell 2
Up for a challenge? Mortal Shell 2 dropped this August, and it’s just as challenging and brutal as you might have anticipated. It’s another action RPG dark fantasy game where you’ll be tossed into a world full of big, ugly monsters all wanting to put you six feet under. Fortunately, you’ll have the ability to pick up different warrior shells, giving you a rather robust and versatile playstyle to combat these beasts. And yes, you can dive into this game without having played the first Mortal Shell, as it’s set up as a standalone sequel.
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Cost of Hope
Been a minute since you started up S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2? Cost of Hope just gave you a reason to drop back into the Zone. This is the first major expansion to release for the game, and it’s adding another dozen or so hours of gameplay for you to play through. With this expansion, we’re getting a story pinned against two factions, and it also adds two new regions for you to explore. But going one step further, the 2.0 update that also came with this game made some rather nice overhauls for the overall gameplay experience. So again, if you haven’t started this game up in a little while, this expansion and the update should hopefully give you more than a few reasons to jump right back into the action.
Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol. 2
We might not have a new mainline installment of Metal Gear Solid at our disposal, but Konami did give us another means of enjoying some of the previous installments. Another volume has dropped for Metal Gear Solid Master Collection. You’ll get the chance to enjoy some of the classic installments that were released over the years. More importantly, you’re getting Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots for modern consoles and PC for the first time. This has been one of the games that fans of the franchise might have missed out entirely since it only came out on the PlayStation 3 back in 2008.
Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls
Mix Marvel and anime together for a fighting game? Count me in. Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls was developed by Arc System Works, so they know a thing or two about delivering some fast-paced fighting games. Players are pitting some Marvel characters in 4v4 battles where you’ll pull off some killer combos with your team. There’s also a storyline here, and the stakes are rather high. Gather your best warriors because if you can’t defeat the Champion of the Universe, then you can kiss your world goodbye.
Star Wars: Zero Company
Star Wars meets XCOM. If that piqued your interest, then check out Star Wars: Zero Company. Here’s a brand new storyline focusing on the final days of the Clone Wars. A new threat has emerged that could be devastating to the galaxy. You’ll assemble a team of misfits as you set out to investigate this new threat. However, it’s a tactical turn-based game, so you’ll need to think carefully about how you go about a threat. Line your characters up just right, provide synergy that will give you the upper hand, and upgrade your characters to help ensure that the next encounter you endure ends in a more efficient victory.
IRON NEST: Heavy Turret Simulator
Look, we’ve seen a lot of war games based around being a soldier on the battlefield or commanding an entire army tactically on the map. However, if you want something different, then maybe Iron Nest: Heavy Turret Simulator might scratch that itch. It’s a game where you’re in charge of a massive turret, safely tucked away from the battlefield. You’ll listen to commands on where to strike, and from there you’ll need to carry out the attack. Find out how to pinpoint the launch, load the correct ammunition, and turn the threat into a massive crater.
Big Walk
One of the breakout hits from August is a game that’s more chill and wacky. Big Walk is a cooperative game designed to be enjoyed by up to 12 people. What you do is up to the group. Explore, get lost, find ways to communicate, rinse and repeat. There are also plenty of puzzles as well to partake in, each giving you a challenge with your friends to solve. Sometimes the most entertaining games are the ones where you’re just hanging out with your friends without focusing too much on a single objective.
