The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is a certified hit on opening day.

As reported by Deadline, the film has made $ 34 million in the US. That makes it the biggest opening of 2026, topping Project Hail Mary’s $ 33.1 million.
It’s also the new record for the highest opening in a Wednesday in April.
Deadline also previously reported that Super Mario Galaxy Movie would make $ 350 million worldwide over this Holy Week coming into the Eater weekend.
Gamers are likely to really enjoy this one, but you should probably limit your expectations on Illumination making a better story. It currently has a critic Rotten Tomatoes score of 43 % and a user review score of 92 %.
This is certainly not the first or last time where the audiences override the critics, but this will probably also be the trend for Nintendo’s Mario movies with Illumination moving forward.
