Dan Houser shared a funny little anecdote about how he lives his life nowadays.
As you already know, Dan was one of the key creative figures in Rockstar Games. He and his brother Sam Houser helped get Grand Theft Auto off the ground, at a time when the studio making it was facing an uncertain future.
Most notably, the Houser brothers where the key creative figures for Grand Theft Auto III up until Grand Theft Auto V, Red Dead Redemption 1 & 2, and Rockstar’s various other games, from The Warriors to Bully.
These games are known as some of the best in the industry’s history. Rockstar was constantly pushing the technology and what was possible, with all the things that wowed fans about what was possible in an open world game.
The closest possible comparison to this is Apple, changing how everyone thought about what a phone could do, when they launched the iPhone.
But with all of that, Dan lives a remarkably simple life.
In an interview with Virgin Radio UK’s Chris Evans Breakfast Show, Dan was asked what top of the line gaming hardware he was using. He said this:
I think just a Wii. I don’t think any I don’t think I have a place for a PlayStation.
He (Dan’s son) has the PlayStation and um he has a gaming PC. That’s too too technical for me.
Is That Really It?
Dan revealed in this interview that his family was also temporarily uprooted. His family lives in LA.
Unfortunately, they were also affected by this year’s Palisades Fire. It does seem that Dan and his loved ones were OK, but they’re not at their home at the moment.
But in spite of that, it sounds like Dan wouldn’t be playing on a gaming PC anyway. And this is where we should remember something else he’s said recently.
Dan Always Said It Wasn’t All Him
Dan told Lex Fridman to his face that he wasn’t the person responsible for all the technical achievements that Grand Theft Auto achieved. It was always Rockstar that was making things like the car radios work in the game since the PlayStation 2.
Dan explained his contribution was telling all these stories that people remember, and of course he’s continued to be a storyteller after Rockstar. But now we can’t help wondering one thing.
What Could Dan Houser Be Playing On His Wii?
Rockstar does have a few games on the Wii. It’s certainly an odd collection but Table Tennis, Manhunt 2, and Bully: Scholarship Edition made their way to Nintendo’s 2000’s breakout hit.
If we were honest about it, it’s just as likely that Dan is content with playing Wii Sports just to let out the stress. After all, if you’re a creator, you’d also understand that creators will want to do literally anything except what they do for work in their spare time.
