The Blood of Dawnwalker Director Says Players Won’t Have A Main Quest

November 24, 2025 by Dennis Patrick

There’s one major difference between this game and The Witcher 3.

One of the big anticipated new games coming out next year is The Blood of Dawnwalker. It’s a new RPG from a new studio, Rebel Wolves. The reason this game has gained so much traction right out of the gate is those behind the project. Stepping into the role of director behind this game is Konrad Tomaszkiewicz, the same director who helped craft the incredibly successful The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt at CD Projekt Red.

Since leaving the studio and building Rebel Wolves, fans have been curious about what the debut title will offer. It’s another dark fantasy RPG just like The Witcher franchise. However, there are some stark differences here. One of which is the fact that when players step into this game world, they’ll be doing so without a main quest shoved in their faces. Instead, you’ll decide what to do and when you’ll go about doing it.

The Blood of Dawnwalker Lacks A Main Quest

Speaking with Eurogamer, the publication learned a little more about Rebel Wolves’ debut title. According to Konrad Tomaszkiewicz, there’s no main quest in this RPG because once you start the game, you already know the goal. Players are setting out to rescue their family, who are held captive. So, if you wanted, you could storm the location where the family is being held right from the start of the game. Of course, you’ll likely get slaughtered just as fast.

No, there’s no main quest. You build your experience from the quests you encounter. You know where your [enemy is]. You can attack this place anytime you want to. It’s up to you if you want to do it by yourself, or if you want to build yourself, find the powerful items, develop your character, or do some quests and find allies to help you do it. We want to bring video games closer to pen-and-paper RPGs and give you the freedom to experience what you want to experience.

Instead, the developers wanted to craft a game that gives players freedom. You’ll be able to explore the world, speak with NPCs, take on quests, and level your character up. By doing so, you’ll likely learn more about what you’ll deal with later on when it comes to rescuing your family or even gathering some allies to lend a hand.

Players Are Both Human & Vampire

However, there’s more to it than just gathering up clues. At the base of this game, we’re dealing with vampires. With humanity enslaved, our protagonist, Coen, finds that his family is held captive by the vampires controlling the land. Meanwhile, Coen is also suffering a vampiric curse that allows him to walk among humans by day while becoming a vampire at night.

So it’s these two sets of abilities players are getting to toy with. The game is also set on a time limit, forcing you to make use of both sides of the coin. Whether you’re interacting with NPCs during the day as a human or becoming a vampire at night, you’ll only have thirty days and thirty nights to rescue your family.

That said, Tomaszkiewicz did note that even if the time runs out, the game doesn’t end. However, they wouldn’t expand on this quite yet, so we might have to wait for the game to drop before we find out what happens after the time wraps up or if you rescue your family. Unfortunately, outside of a generic launch window of 2026, we don’t know when we’ll get our hands on The Blood of Dawnwalker quite yet. That said, when it does launch, you’ll find it on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.
