Randy Pitchford On Borderlands 4 Rarity: “Not All Players Will Ever See A Pearlescent”

October 31, 2025 by Ryan Parreno

The community could make Pearlescents a common sight online.

Randy Pitchford has explained why Gearbox decided to bring back Pearlescents in Borderlands 4.

The Rare Origins Of Pearlescents

Pearlescents were originally a bug, not a feature, in Borderlands.

In the very 1st Borderlands, some legendary weapons would accidentally generate at a higher rarity level than Gearbox intended. The game ran out of colors, so these weapons were simply colored default white.

However, they would clearly appear above the yellows, oranges, and dark oranges at the top of legendary weapon rarities. Gearbox fixed this bug in Patch 1.3.0, the same time they released the DLC The Secret Armory of General Knoxx.

Gearbox also decided to add Pearlescents as a real legendary weapon type in the DLC. To avoid confusion with the most common white weapons, Pearlescents are now colored cyan.

Pearlescents also appeared on Borderlands 2, but then disappeared in succeeding games. For this reason, Hooked Gamers asked Randy Pitchford why they decided to bring them back.

Randy Pitchford’s Harsh Words About Pearlescents

Randy said this (edited for clarity):

Pearlescence is something we’ve talked about for a long time. We kind of flirted with it in a sidestep when we did Commander Lilith & the Fight for Sanctuary (Borderlands 2 DLC).

We played with what’s beyond Pearlescent? We introduced the Effervescent concept. And we didn’t really go that far with trying to add rarities.

As people know from the launch of Borderlands 4 there are shiny weapons that are very, very rare.

And pearlescent is another class of rarity – even more rare than legendary. They’re different from Shinies in the sense that they’re entirely new guns and they’re entirely bespoke. But yeah, they’re very, very, very rare.

And not all players will ever see a Pearlescent. In fact, I expect just looking at the math that most players won’t. But players that are grinding a lot or working really hard at it, there will be a moment when one drops and then that’s when you lose your freaking mind.

At this point narrative director Sam Winkler interjects to help complete the picture. He says:

These are guys that have been playing the game for half a decade, like 3,000 hours and they’re like “I’ve never seen this. Holy crap”.

To which Randy concludes:

And it’s exciting for us to bring that back.

Pearlescents can’t be found in Borderlands 4 yet. They will be coming in a free update scheduled in Q1 2026.

It will be interesting to see how Pearlescents will affect the community, with players potentially sharing whatever weapons they find. Can Borderlands 4 players make Pearlescents a common sight online, if not necessarily common to own? We think that’s where we’re heading in this online age.
