Walter Maurice Houser, the father of Dan and Sam Houser, has passed away.

The Absurd Report shared the news on Twitter:

The father of Dan & Sam Houser has passed away. Dan reveals in ABP opening that Walter passed away while he was finishing the novel.

“To my father, who died while I was finishing this book, and to my mother, who together taught me to love books.”

RIP Walter Houser.

They quote part of the opening Dan wrote for the book version of A Better Paradise.

What We Publicly Know About Walter Houser

Whether it was by design or simply because no one asked, we only know some basic information about Walter.

He was a solicitor at West End, and an alto saxophonist. In 1971, he married UK actress Geraldine Moffat.

Moffat herself was a TV actress through the 1960s. She is most famous for the original 1971 version of heist film Get Carter.

In a performance that’s literally a lifetime ago, she played the glamorous but duplicitous femme fatale Glenda. You can watch her acting opposite Michael Caine here.

Walter Houser In Grand Theft Auto

Both of the Houser’s parents were cast in the Grand Theft Auto games. Walter’s cameo is relatively minor, but a fun one to go back to.

In Grand Theft Auto IV, Walter is a saxophone player you can find busking across the city. In fact, he could be a useful person to keep coming back to.

For one, if you come up to him and give him $ 10, you will get your health back. Walter will also stop playing to simply give you his thanks.

If you give him money three times, you will receive a cellphone ringtone (remember those?) for Sonny Rollins’ 1956 jazz hit St. Thomas. Of course, this is the same song Walter was playing this whole time.

You can hear the Sonny Rollins original here.

Walter and his Rollins cover also comes up in The Ballad of Gay Tony. His cover gets played by no less than Lazlow Jones in the radio station Integrity 2.0.

As fans, it’s not our place to speculate on what kind of a person the Houser’s father is. Dan didn’t even reveal when or how he had passed away, and we should respect their privacy.

Of course, we all extend our condolences to the Houser family, and both his minor and major role in the Grand Theft Auto franchise.
