CryEngine 3 GDC Demo Offers a Glimpse at Next-Gen Graphics

March 12, 2012 by Josh Harmon

Games are about to get a whole lot prettier.

Crytek has released a new trailer for CryEngine 3, showcasing many of the high-end graphical techniques that we can expect to see from the next generation of hardware.

The trailer showcases some of CryEngine 3's flashier capabilities, including character self-shading, tessalation (of the environmental, character, and ocean varieties), advanced particle shading, real time-reflections, enchanced lighting effects, and dynamic AI navigation.

To close things out, the trailer offers a few shots of the company's upcoming free-to-play shooter, Warface, which is expected to be released later this year, as well as some promo footage of their new cloud-based social gaming platform, GFACE.

Also on display is Cinema Sandbox, a visualization and cinematics tool built in CryEngine that offers support for alembic point cache support, Catmull-Clark compliant SubD surfaces, and real time approximated area lights. Yeah, we don't know what any of those words mean, either.

By the looks of things, Crytek's 2012 lineup will definitely be giving PC owners the same push to upgrade that Crysis did back in 2007. Sadly, "Will it run Warface?" just doesn't have the same ring to it, though.
