Cross-platform play between the Xbox One and PC versions of Psyonix’s Rocket League is available from today, the studio’s Jeremy Dunham has announced on the Xbox Wire.
The PlayStation 4 version of the game has always supported cross-platform play with PC, leading to speculation that there would PS4 and Xbox One players would be able to go head-to-head once the update went live. It’s unclear at this point whether or not that’s actually the case.
Rocket League’s Xbox One update will be in place at 18:00 Eastern/15:00 Pacific today.
Psyonix has said it has the technology to enable PS4 and Xbox One crossplay but it’s up to Microsoft and Sony to come to an agreement. Microsoft is “ready” to deal with any company in relation to crossplay with any other system, adding that it’s always up to the developer to decide.
Sony meanwhile pointed to its support for crossplay as far back as 2002, noting that they would be “happy” to discuss the possibility with any developer or publisher.
We’ll find out later today if the walls between consoles are starting to crumble.
