Nintendo Is Making Your Digital Games Into Virtual Cards – Here’s How They’ll Work

March 27, 2025 by Dennis Patrick

Nintendo is changing things up for your digital library next month.

The Nintendo Switch 2 is nearly here, and a direct presentation is set to take place next month. However, the big Nintendo company wanted to showcase one more Direct based around the current Switch console. Today, we’re finding out through that Direct presentation that they will change how players handle their digital libraries.

When you have a physical game, it’s easier to manage between multiple consoles. For instance, if you own a standard Switch along with the Switch Lite, you could bring your physical game between both consoles. However, that wasn’t the case for digital games. Today, we’re discovering that that will no longer be an issue.

It’s been revealed that digital games will turn into Virtual Cards. These Virtual Cards can be swapped between two consoles. While you can only swap between two consoles, this will make it easier to enjoy your digital libraries no matter what Switch you’re playing on.

Additionally, it was confirmed that a new feature will be added for your family groups. If someone within your family wants to enjoy one of your digital games, then you can actually lend it out. This can only be done one game at a time within your family group. Meanwhile, it’s noted that the games lent out will automatically be returned to your account after two weeks.

We’re assuming you can again lend the game out to the same person afterward, with the game once again returning after the two-week limit is reached. Unfortunately, we don’t have a specific date quite yet for when this feature will be rolled out. Instead, during the Direct presentation, Nintendo confirmed that Virtual Cards will become available with a system update planned for next month.

Meanwhile, we might learn a little more about this feature next month when we get the Direct presentation on the Switch 2. That’s, of course, speculation on our part, but we’ll have to wait and see what Nintendo has planned for the upcoming presentation on April 2, 2025.
