Monster Hunter Wilds: How to Perform an Offset Attack

March 25, 2025 by Matt Villei

Here’s what you need to know!

The Offset Attack is the biggest risk vs. reward mechanic in Monster Hunter Wilds. This new type of attack can topple monsters with just a single blow but requires the players using the attack to put themselves in the way of incoming damage. With only a few weapons even being able to perform Offset Attacks, those who master this new tool will be part of an exclusive club. So, allow me to show you how to use this new attack and how it works. This guide will show players how to perform an Offset Attack in Monster Hunter Wilds.

How to Perform an Offset Attack in Monster Hunter Wilds

Offset Attacks are powerful attacks that, if timed to clash with a monster’s attack, have the chance to stagger the creature and give you an opening to perform a follow-up on the stunned enemy. This usually means you will need to prepare yourself for an attack and put yourself at risk of taking a hit because missing the timing of one of these attacks will leave you open to being punished. There are a total of 6 weapon classes that can perform Offset Attacks. Below is a full list of all the weapons that can perform Offset Attacks and the moves that fall under this attack category:

  • Great Sword (Offset Rising Slash)
  • Hammer (Upswing: Third hit of Standard Attack basic combo)
  • Hunting Horn (Offset Melody)
  • Switch Axe (Offset Rising Slash: Must be in Axe Mode to perform this move)
  • Insect Glaive (Descending Slash: Must have the Red Extract to perform this move)
  • Heavy Bowgun (Wyverncounter Ignition: Must be in Ignition Mode to perform this move)

When you land an Offset Attack, you will deal Offset Damage, an unseen number that functions similarly to ailments. When you build this number up, it will eventually lead to a stagger when it crosses a threshold. This number can only be built from Offset Attacks and after you get a stagger from an Offset Attack, the threshold you need to reach will increase. This means it will take more Offset Attacks to cause a stun. If you can master these attacks and learn the moveset of your adversaries, you can constantly knock over your foes and deal massive damage!

You now know how to perform an Offset Attack in Monster Hunter Wilds. Stay tuned to Gameranx for more news, updates, and guides for Monster Hunter Wilds as well as other great games in the future.
