Can The Nintendo Switch 2 “Save” The US Console Market?

February 26, 2025 by Todd Black

No pressure.

There are multiple factors in the Nintendo Switch 2 launch that’ll help determined whether it’ll be a hit or not. So far, we have gotten the looks/versatility of the system via the “reveal trailer” in January, as well as the numerous patents and such that highlight what the new Joy-Cons can do. That has people excited on certain levels, but it can’t end there. On April 2nd, we’ll find out about the gaming lineup that the system will have at launch, which will be a huge factor in the system’s release and initial sales numbers. Speaking of sales, the arguably most important factor will be the sales price for the Switch 2. Nintendo needs to make a profit and avoid getting screwed by tariffs, but it has to be cheap enough for people to buy.

The reason we’re focusing on all of this right now is because of a Blue Sky post made by NPD analyst Mat Piscatella, who went onto the social media platform to talk about the decline in console sales over the last year in the United States. Across all three brands, Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo, console sales were seriously down, and for two of them, that’s not looking to improve in 2025 due to financial woes within the country and the fact that the market simply isn’t growing.

We recommend reading the entire thread below.

For total US HW to get growing again in '25, Switch 2 will have to be able to offset PS5/XBS/Switch declines. Will be a big ask, especially if supply constraints exist. I'm hoping we see single-digit % growth in HW spend in the US this year, but error bars on the forecast are large. Throw a dart.

So, can the Nintendo Switch 2 “offset the decline” of the Xbox Series X and PS5? In theory, absolutely. First off, it’ll be a new console, which will be an immediate injection into the market as it’s something “fresh and new.” Second, it’ll likely have at least one new 1st party title and several key 3rd party titles that people will want at launch, which means that many will be interested in getting the system on launch day so that they can play it immediately.

Just as important is that if The Big N can keep the momentum of the OG Switch going, the Switch 2 will have constant new releases of exclusive titles, which will keep bringing people back to the new system. The Switch’s success was built on its massive software lineup, which is partially why the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S are in such unfavorable positions right now and are going multiplatform to try and recover.

To be fair, all of this is speculation. We don’t know just how much of an impact the Switch 2 will have on the US market or even the world market. April 2nd will be a key factor in determining what comes next.
