Civilization VII Launches Alongside Key Patch To Fix PC Issues

February 11, 2025 by Todd Black

It ain’t building up the world, or a game that lets you build up the world.

The team at Firaxis has been working hard to ensure that the release of Civilization VII is as grand and special as it possibly can be. After all, this is the developer’s greatest title in many respects. It’s the one that many associate with them due to how marvelous the world-building game is and how much it’s grown over the course of its own history. The title used to have the most basic of sprites to control then it went to having 3D models, and now, the level of detail and ability to control everything within the world has led to new levels of gameplay.

That awe and wonder is appreciated, no doubt, and many of you will want to participate in Civilization VII now that it’s fully out on console and PC. Previously, the game was available to those who bought a special edition, which allowed them a few days early access. Now, though, it’s out on all systems, including the Nintendo Switch, and the team dropped a trailer to celebrate:

Now it's your turn. Make history in Sid Meier's Civilization VII, available now on #NintendoSwitch!

Now, if you look at that trailer and go, “Um, isn’t there something off about what was shown?” You’re absolutely right. That trailer highlighted all the “perfect scores” that the game got from certain critics. However, if you recall, full-on players of the game, especially those on PC, weren’t as amused by what they were seeing/playing. While the game was fine overall, many players had serious issues with the UI. They noted how bad it was in several forums, including Reddit, which led to questions about what Firaxis would do to fix it. The answer, as it were, was to release a patch just before the game’s launch to fix everything before the many legions of other players came in to get it.

The Steam notes break down the patch, but here are just some of the things they fixed:

  • “Fixed an issue where Leaders fail to have a portrait when the relationship has changed during gameplay.
  • Improved the alignment of leader names and portraits on the Age Summary, when viewing the Overview screen of the Victories Rankings.
  • Fixed an issue where the background color remains the default color when the user changes it in the Player Customize tab.”

That’s just SOME of the issues that were adjusted, fixed, or corrected. The fact that some of these problems were in the game at all is sad, and it makes you wonder how so many “perfect scores” were had.
