Marvel Rivals Has Gone Gold

November 29, 2024 by Ryan Parreno

The pressure is on for NetEase to make this game an enduring favorite.

NetEase has confirmed that Marvel Rivals has gone gold.

They shared this brief message on Twitter:

“Good news, Rivals….

Marvel Rivals has gone Gold!

Let’s ignite the battle on December 6th!”

There are no surprises here, but fans who were looking forward to this title won’t have to wait that much longer anymore.

NetEase has obviously been working on this game for some time, but they really only announced it earlier this year. While we had initially speculated about its prospects in light of the pending release of Concord, and the sudden announcement of Deadlock.

Of course, since then, Concord finished its production cycle in record order, and it came to light that Deadlock was from ready for release. Subsequently, this year saw a renewed popularity for established titles like Overwatch 2, Apex Legends, and Valorant.

At the same time, we saw other new titles get announced alongside Marvel Rivals, such as Star Wars: Hunters and FragPunk. But Marvel Rivals has a clear advantage overall of the rest, thanks to its use of the Marvel license.

Remarkably, after seeing other studios struggle to make Marvel licensed titles to appeal to gamers, NetEase seems to have done very well in meeting fan expectations. They recognized that the license won’t be enough to appeal to fans if the gameplay doesn’t hold up to its peers. As we know, a combination of diligent work, and a clear community feedback loop, means that we have seen the game shape up very well in full public view.

Marvel Rivals has huge potential to be real crowd pleaser, and NetEase clearly knew this as well. They have planned for fan favorite versions of their characters to appear as character skins, and they already showed us that you can play as Chris Hemsworth’s Thor, or the classic violet violent version of Psylocke.

While everyone does assume that Marvel Rivals is going to be a hit at the onset, questions abound if it will have enduring appeal. Let’s be clear here; there’s no point comparing this title to the likes of Concord and Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League. The bar Marvel Rivals needs to clear isn’t found down at the floor, but high up in the ceiling safely occupied by Fortnite and Call of Duty.

With NetEase promising all characters being completely freely playable, they have aggressively pushed to get Marvel fans and gamers excited. And we’ll find out if Marvel Rivals can trounce Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 as the biggest launch of the year as early as next week.
