SEGA Praises The Acquistion Of Atlus, Notes Recent Game Successes

November 20, 2024 by Todd Black

The numbers don’t lie!

There has been plenty of talk about acquisitions lately, and when you go back over the last few years, you’ll see that many big-name publishers have bought out certain developers and brands to try and “expand their portfolio,” often with mixed success. Look at Sony and Bungie for proof of that or the ups and downs Microsoft has had after buying Bethesda and everyone under its umbrella. However, if you want to talk about one of the more successful acquisitions in recent gaming history, you need only look at SEGA and Atlus. The combination of these two has led to one of the best gaming lineups of 2024 and some great sales success.

Sega Sammy Holdings, which is the parent company of the gaming publisher, did a shareholder Q&A recently, and they were asked about the sales of recent titles. Specifically, Sonic X Shadow Generations and Metaphor: ReFantazio were two key titles in SEGA’s portfolio for the year. The company proclaimed that both were doing great and going beyond the sales expectations put against them. If you recall, both games crossed one million in no time flat. For the latter, it was the fastest-selling game in company history! Pretty cool, huh?

The praise didn’t end there, as Sega Sammy noted:

“In the past, Atlus had limited resources and often narrowed down sales to specific countries, regions, and platforms, but by joining forces with Sega, they have gained the capability to expand their targets. We believe that the strong start of Metaphor: ReFantazio was made possible by the high quality of the product, as well as Sega’s publishing power that facilitated a simultaneous worldwide launch on multiple platforms.”

That’s fair to say, especially since this was a new IP that the RPG giant was making, and it needed all the help it could get to ensure that it was a success outside of just game development. Sure enough, the title is one of the best-reviewed games of 2024, has sold well over a million units, and was recently nominated for Game of the Year by The Game Awards!

Just as important, Atlus had two other hit games in 2024, and a certain remake was honestly up for GOTY as well, with the next entry in the beloved RPG saga being one of the most-anticipated games to be announced.

So, yeah, sometimes mergers and acquisitions don’t work out that well. Then, you have times like with these two, where the teams just mesh well together, and great products and results emerge.
