Battlefield 1 Dev Interview, Wants To Avoid Battlefield 4 Mistakes

May 7, 2016 by Nick Monroe

Daniel Berlin talks about the team’s motivations when it came to Battlefield 1.

battlefield1interviewheaderYesterday, Battlefield 1 was revealed to the internet for the first time.

Daniel Berlin is the lead designer of Battlefield 1, and he did an in-depth interview with GamesBeat about the upcoming World War I game.

They realized that Battlefield 4 had a rocky launch.

We know it was a difficult launch. We’ve been working on this for a long time. We released Battlefront, which did really well. We’re pushing an open beta to ensure stability. We’ve taken a lot of learnings from that experience, and we feel like we succeeded with Battlefront. We’ll take everything we learned there and apply it to Battlefield One as well.

The World War I setting was a longtime desire of the DICE team, and they wanted to finally give it a go for this next game. They did extensive research into the era, and wanted to clarify misconceptions about the time period. Things like shotguns, pistols, and automatic rifles were actually around during that time.

This isn’t some sort of alternate history game. No time travel, no hijinks. Historically accurate.

Even though tanks and reloading may have been slow, Daniel Berlin says they still made sure guns and vehicles are still fun. Tanks have an emphasized expression of power and awe to them in their design. They couldn’t reveal much on specialized units or the possibility of megalodons. But they didn’t say no either. They’ll be revealing many more gadgets and gizmos in the weeks ahead.

Battlefield 1 comes out October 21st for Xbox One, PS4, PC.
