Ubisoft Suddenly Cancels Tokyo Game Show 2024 Plans

September 24, 2024 by Carley Garcia

It makes sense that they’d do it, but we didn’t think they’d actually do it.

Just days before Tokyo Game Show 2024 begins, Ubisoft has canceled its appearance at the event. In a new message posted on X, the company simply said that the decision had been made “due to various circumstances,” offering no concrete reason for the sudden decision.

“We regret to inform our community that due to various circumstances, we have decided to cancel our appearance at Tokyo Game Show 2024, including the stream scheduled for September 26 at 3 PM. We apologize for the short notice.”

The cancelation comes amidst waves of criticism facing Assassin’s Creed Shadows, which some complain is inaccurate in its representation of Japanese history and culture. The game is expected to have a preview event at the end of September, and many were expecting this to manifest during Tokyo Game Show. It’s unclear what the company may be planning ahead of the game’s release in November.

Ubisoft has also been heavily marketing its free-to-play shooter XDefiant. Released in May, the title drew in large player numbers immediately after launch but has recently seen a massive drop in engagement. The company has gone on record to state that the game is “not dying,” and that they are seeking to improve the game’s Netcode.

Tokyo Game Show 2024 will be one of the largest gaming events in recent history, with over 731 exhibitors and 3,190 booths currently confirmed to be appearing at this month’s convention. Sony Interactive Entertainment will fully return to this year’s event, breaking five years of PlayStation silence at what many consider the Olympics of gaming events.

The event will take place at Makuhari Messe in Chiba, Japan, from September 26 to September 29.
