Will Sony’s Next State of Play Feature Another Unwanted Remaster?

September 19, 2024 by Todd Black

Seriously, Sony?

Sony has been a bit of a punching bag recently, as has Microsoft, but we’ll let them slide for now, and it’s honestly all its own fault. Don’t forget that the company announced the PS5 Pro not too long ago, and it wasn’t exactly what people were hoping for. It barely improved the standard PS5, yet was well over $700, not including the accessories you were likely having to get just to enjoy it fully. Another issue is that outside of a certain adorable robot, the PS5 still doesn’t have the best titles coming out, and a State of Play that’s rumored for next week might not change that.

Let’s not forget that the last time Sony had a State of Play, it focused heavily on a title that was canceled less than two weeks after launch! So, yeah, they need to improve things, and yet, according to Jeff Grubb, they’re going to have at least two remasters that fans aren’t going to be happy about. There have been leaks about Horizon Zero Dawn getting a PS5-style remaster, which fans aren’t thrilled to hear as the game isn’t that old. Then, Grubb, on his show, noted this:

“There’s some other remaster in the works that will be even less exciting – and it’s definitely not Bloodborne. State of Play, right? It’ll probably get announced there.”

While there is no confirmation that something like that is coming, it is a bit concerning, and it would follow the narrative of what’s happening in Sony currently.

The reason that many aren’t happy about the remaster with Aloy is that her first title came out in 2017! That game already looked beautiful on the PS4, and was one of the biggest hits that system had! That’s why it got a sequel that was also a big hit for the PS5. Many are citing that Sony, among others, is trying to do “cash grabs” with certain remasters and “remakes” versus working on new titles to entertain gamers, and they’re not wrong about that.

Age is something that matters when it comes to remaking or remastering something, and Aloy’s adventures aren’t old enough to do that. It’s not unlike what Naughty Dog did with its franchise where it remastered and then remade it multiple times all within the course of a decade.

As for what game could get that remaster treatment, it’s hard to say. If it’s “even less exciting,” it’s likely to be another game from the PS4 era or from a franchise that no one wants a remaster from.
