Dear Esther Rises to Top of Steam Charts

February 15, 2012 by Ian Miles Cheong

New indie release Dear Esther claims a top spot on Steam’s sales charts.

Despite being out for only a few hours, Dear Esther has risen to the top of the Steam sales charts, with over 16,000 copies sold. The game’s developer thechineseroom reports that the game has sustained enough profitability to pay for the its entire development costs.

Originally developed as a mod for Half-Life 2, Dear Esther is a touted as an interactive novel, in which a story is told through the use of graphics, words, and powered by the Source Engine.

In Dear Esther, the player finds himself on a mysterious island, with no recollection as to how he got there. He must uncover fragments of story as he explores through the island and along the way, attempt to discover who Esther is and why she summoned him.

Dear Esther can be bought on Steam for a meager $9.99.
