PlayStation Stars Changes Frustrate the Program’s Userbase

August 26, 2024 by Carley Garcia

Many fans are now wondering where the benefits have gone.

Some major changes are coming to the PlayStation Stars loyalty reward program on October 24, and many subscribers aren’t happy. First launched in 2022, the program allows PlayStation users to earn rewards by buying and playing games, including digital collectibles and free games.

A new email sent to subscribers outlines the upcoming changes. Any new points earned will expire at the end of the month, plus 12 months from purchase date, and existing points will expire at the end of the month, plus 24 months from the earning date.

Additionally, starting on March 1, 2025, eligible purchases will no longer include subscription payments made via the PlayStation Store, including service renewals. If players don’t accept these new changes, their membership will be canceled and all points they’ve accrued will be lost.

Fans are baffled by the changes. With PlayStation Plus subscriptions no longer granting points and having a timeline placed on point usage, it feels like Sony is trying its hardest to make fans spend money more quickly, rather than reward long-time use.

“Not giving points for PS+ payments is kind of silly. Every other time you spend money on the store you get points, but not for the subscription,” one Reddit user wrote.

“Earned reward points should never expire, for anything. It’s a scam that most do, just to get you to spend faster,” said another.

“By evaluating feedback, continuing to improve the experience, iterating quickly, and continuously adding new members on a rolling basis, we will be able to ensure our members have an optimized experience with PlayStation Stars,” said a Sony Q&A upon the launch of the service in 2022.
