Capcom has announced that Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess is launching a demo, with an enticing reward.
As confirmed on Steam, the demo is now live, and will allow you to play some of the stages for as many times as players want without a time limit.
To further entice gamers to give the game a try, Capcom has arranged for a crossover with Okami. For starters, there is a snowy white Amaterasu costume for the playable character Soh, as well as a replica of her weapon, Thunder Edge. On the other hand, the character you protect throughout the game, the Maiden of the Mountain Yoshiro, has a costume of Amaterasu’s old friend Waka.
But, if gamers want this content, they will have to earn it. As explained on Capcom’s website, they want players to earn one billion crystals in the demo so that they can earn the Amaterasu costume and Thunder Edge.
In a separate challenge, players have to take a picture of a Lucky Mallet if they find it in the game and post it online. If they succeed at this challenge, they earn the Waka costume, and the Okami soundtrack in this game.
If everyone succeeds in meeting these goals, the content will be added to the base game for free at launch date. Capcom clearly heard the fans who got curious about this new game after they had mentioned Okami in its marketing last month.
Okami still exists, of course, with a remastered version widely available, even on the Nintendo Switch. But Capcom wants to drive that existing fandom to get interested in this game, as another bold new experiment for the company.
Capcom is not particularly well known for making strategy games, and it would be fair to say that they have dabbled in it, while focusing more on arcade, action, and horror games for the most part. In 1989, they released Destiny of an Emperor for the NES, a strategy RPG set in the fictionalized historical novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms. In 2003, they released Onimusha Tactics, a spinoff on the Game Boy Advance using the Onimusha characters in a non-canon title with Final Fantasy Tactics style gameplay.
Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess feels like another attempt to cross over ideas from action and strategy games, after Nintendo’s Pikmin and Double Fine’s Brutal Legend. We’ll see soon enough if Capcom makes a compelling enough experience to draw fans in to the genre.
Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess is releasing on July 19, 2024, on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Steam, and Microsoft Store. It will also be Day One Game Pass.
