Yesterday, Housemarque teased an announcement related to the third anniversary of the roguelike third-person shooter Returnal. Today, we learned that the game would be getting a graphic novel release and an art book.
Returnal: Fallen Asteria, an 88-page graphic novel from Dark Horse Comics, will be released on October 22 in bookstores and in comic book stores the following day. It will retail for $19.99.
“After Helios crashes onto a hostile alien world, Selene Vassos, a lone ASTRA scout must fight for her life against the horrific hostiles that live beyond every shadow and a trail of distorted memories,” the Amazon listening for the graphic novel reads.
“Can she hold on long enough to track down the White Shadow signal? Mystery shrouds the world of Atropos and Selene begins to wonder: will she find answers at the end of her journey, or is this nightmare inescapable?”
A 224-page Returnal art book is also on the way, though no release date has been revealed. Retailing for $49.99, the book will include “concept art of the volatile biomes and terrifying enemies, as well as insightful commentary from the game’s creative team.”
The game’s opening chapter has been animated to celebrate the announcement. Check it out below:
Returnal was released for the PlayStation 5 in 2021. A PC release came in 2023. The game won several awards, including Best Action Game at The Game Awards 2021, Outstanding Achievement in Audio Design and Original Music Composition at the 25th Annual D.I.C.E. Awards in 2022, and Best Game at the 18th British Academy Games Awards.
Rather than a sequel, Housemarque is currently working on a new IP.
