Doom Creator John Romero Launches Kickstarter With Adrian Carmack

April 25, 2016 by Stephen Daly

The game is coming to PC and Mac in late 2018.

Blackroom
id Software co-founders John Romero and Adrian Carmack have formed a new studio Night Work Games as a subsidiary of Romero Games and launched a Kickstarter for a new FPS called Blackroom.

The fundraiser is seeking $700,000 for the game, which they aim to launch in winter 2018 for PC and Mac.

Blackroom is said to be a “visceral, varied and violent shooter that harkens back to classic FPS play with a mixture of exploration, speed, and intense, weaponized combat. Use fast, skillful movement to dodge enemy attacks, circle-strafe your foes, and rule the air as you rocket jump in the single- and multiplayer modes.”

The game’s multiplayer modes include co-op, 1-on-1 deathmatch, and free-for-all arena.

“It is incredible to work with Adrian again,” John Romero, who’s acting as game lead, said in a press release. “We’re developing exactly the type of game we think a lot of shooter fans want. It’s the type of shooter we’re known for, and the type of game we love to play ourselves. It’s a skillful shooter, from movement to weapon and map mastery.”

The game’s features include:

  • Single-Player Campaign – 10 Hours, Leaderboard Challenge Modes
  • Multiplayer – Co-op, 1-on-1 Deathmatch, Arena
  • Multiplayer Maps – 6 Built-In + Community Maps
  • Fully Moddable, Run Dedicated Servers, Create Maps
  • New Soundtrack by acclaimed metal guitarist George Lynch

Blackroom is set in a world where tech company HOXAR has created the ability to generate “fully-realized holographic worlds that are indistinguishable from reality, all inside of a giant black room.”

“Finding early favour amongst military and police organizations, Blackroom continues to be prized for its life-like ability to train specialists against the horrors of war and urban terror. Even commercial clients have lined up to develop HoloSims that might terrify adults and delight children. Now, though, simulations are being twisted and warped into each other, and blending with something even more sinister.

“In the single-player campaign, you step into the shoes of Dr. Santiago Sonora, Chief hNode Engineer at HOXAR. When testing of their new, leading-edge Predictive Memory technology reveals troubling anomalies that blend the real world with the virtual, you’re sent in with both Boxel and gun to investigate and are swept across a staggering and dangerous array of simulations. Peering into your mind and tapping into your deepest memories and fears, however, it’s clear that the Blackroom is not all fun and games.”

At the time of writing, the Kickstarter has raised $23,483.
